It doesn’t get much more badass than The Fabulous Freebirds in their prime:
Great video of Steve ‘Dr. Death’ Williams winning the UWF title from ‘Big Bubba’ Rogers (who later went on to considerable fame in the WWE as The Big Boss Man). Includes training footage at the University of Oklahoma, where Williams was a force as a college football player. A popular topic of conversation among our circle of MMA and wrestling geeks is which ‘kayfabe’ era wrestling stars could have made the transition to MMA had that been an option back in the day. Williams is always at the top of the list. He was Brock Lesnar before there was a Brock Lesnar:
Slayer plays ‘Seasons In The Abyss’ live at the Big Four 2010:
And here’s ‘Hanger 18′ from the same show:
This is from the ‘Big Four’ concert–the mighty Megadeth playing ‘Holy Wars…the Punishment Due’ live:
And while we’re at it, here’s an awesome clip of Metallica playing ‘One’ live in Lima, Peru earlier this year:
Yeah, Metallica can be douchebags at time but you can’t argue with their music. Here’s the video for ‘One’ which is on a short list of the most kick ass metal videos ever:
Jerry Rice is being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame this weekend. We don’t pay much attention to ’stick and ball’ sports, and none of us grew up as 49ers honks but as someone who got to watch Rice in his prime he’s basically as good as it gets. Just a class dude off the field and an absolute monster on it. Sports fans love to argue about who is the best at their position, but there’s really not a good argument for Rice not being the best wide receiver in NFL history. He was blessed with insane speed and a great pair of hands, but Rice is in Canton this weekend because he worked his ass off. He missed only 10 games in 20 NFL seasons and his work ethic is legendary. He’s from the ‘old school’ of wide receivers that ran precise routes (Dennis Green called him the best route runner he’d ever seen) and even blocked (Rice is considered the best blocking WR in history, which is something of a lost art).
There’s few things we enjoy more than footage of The Kiwi Sheepherders before they were sanitized and neutered in the WWE as ‘The Bushwhackers’. Before they became a comedy act in Vince McMahon’s circus the Sheepherders–at this point Jonathan Boyd and Luke Williams–were some of the most brutal heels in the sport. The Fabulous Ones (Stan Lane and Steve Keirn) were a solid team as well–huge babyfaces in Memphis at this point. Lane would, of course, go on to join one of the greatest tag teams in history as he replaced ‘Loverboy’ Dennis Condrey in The Midnight Express.
And while we’re at it, here’s Slayer from the same show:
