IGN on the “other” MMA video game
By Jim Murphy May 12th, 2008Video game site IGN.com has a speculative article about a rumored “Randy Couture” endorsed MMA video game. There’s also supposedly a EliteXC game in early development stages:
Randy Couture’s recent revelation in an IGN interview that he’s in discussions with EA to be featured in an upcoming MMA title got us to thinking. Sure, Couture’s currently under a UFC deal, but that deal could be months away from expiring, allowing Couture the opportunity to put out a game with whatever organization he wants to connect himself to.
Of course, EliteXC Fighting would sell significantly fewer copies than, say, Randy Couture Ground and Pound-Out. (We’re copyrighting that name.) Linking up with Couture, even if just for a video game, though, might allow the company to not only sell more copies of its video game, but even provide it the money it needs to survive in a very challenging marketplace.
Who, then, would a Couture fighting game contain? Likely, it would be fighters not under UFC or WEC contract who have some sort of name recognition in the US, whether it came through previous UFC experience or a PRIDE background. While talented fighters like Tatsuya Kawajiri, Shinya Aoki, and Gesias Calvancanti have a case for being amongst the best fighters in the world, let’s face it: No one in the US is going to buy a game because Kawajiri or Misaki is in it, or pass if they’re not.
I will say this much–I don’t play video games at the moment, primarily because I have an addictive personality and I’m afraid I’d get hooked. If, however, EA Sports releases a game with Shinya Aoki–and particularly if they license his “Baka Survivor” ring entrance music–I will go down the day its released and buy the game and the platform–XBox 360 or PS3–to play it on.
