Skinlab video shoot w/ UFC fighters
By Jim Murphy May 14th, 2008A week or so ago we reported that UFC fighters Nate Quarry and Greg Thompson were to appear in an upcoming video of the excellent Bay Area metal band Skinlab. That video has been shot and Skinlab has posted some pictures of the proceedings. From the looks of it, the band will be playing in a UFC style octagon and will have simulated fight footage between Quarry and Thompson. Here’s a press release on the video shoot from RoadRunner Records. “F-bombs” are courtesy of the band and with the express written permission of Dana White and Zuffa, LLC. :
The group filmed a video for “In for the Kill” yesterday (Monday, May 12) at the group’s warehouse in Oakland, California with new, up-and-coming director Jourdan McClure. The clip will feature an appearance by rebounding UFC fighter Nate Quarry and Greg Thompson.
Commented the band: “Thanks to all our homey/girls that stopped by to to participate; we had a (f-bomb) blast!!!! Huge thanks to Jordan McClure for pulling this video off. Waaaaaay beyond anything we had ever imagined. The (f-bomb) set was amazing. Nate and Greg are some of the coolest cats you’ll ever meet. They came in a and did their job making it look so damn easy. Huge, huge props to all the guys. Just a (f-bomb) rad video shoot!!”
Actually, it sort of sounds like Dana *wrote* that (f-bomb) press release…

Not sure why they refer to Quarry as a “rebounding” fighter–he did have the bad fortune to be in the cage with Kalib Starnes when he decided to make like Daffy Duck and run around for three rounds rather than fight. Quarry did everything he could against an opponent that had no interest in engaging and in the process demonstrated the results of his recent emphasis on boxing skills. He totally bewildered Quarry with an effective jab and slick combinations. He mixed up his head and body work nicely and threw in some Muay Thai style leg kicks to keep Quarry even more off balance than he already was. His effective boxing appeared to be what set Starnes off a-runnin’ as he looked like he’d never seen basic boxing technique before. He’s the person that suffered the most from Starnes’ antics–like any up and coming fighter he could have used an impressive win to distinguish himself from his peers. Had his opponent bothered to compete he would have likely won by stoppage and certainly would have taken an impressive unanimous decision victory. The fact that he looked sharp as hell has been completely overshadowed by Starnes’ disgraceful performance. While the Zuffa “suits” are most likely aware that Quarry was there to fight and looked very good against a pitiful opponent, that fact might be lost on many fight fans who incorrectly have the opinion that he was just the beneficiary of de facto “forfeit”.

Expect to see more MMA themes in music videos in the future–particularly heavy metal videos as MMA and metal go together like an uppercut and a chin. The Skinlab MySpace page has a ton of additional photos available in high-rez glory:
