UFC 84: Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva
By Jim Murphy May 24th, 2008This is the next live fight but they’re showing Christian Wellisch vs. Shane Corwin from the taped undercard. Its a quick one, and we’ll pick up the coverage when the live action resumes. Quick fight–Corwin ends it with a perfectly placed punch and thanks his boxing coach afterward. No doubt, as that’s as excellent a punch as you’ll see anywhere…
OK, Jardine vs. Silva is up next and the video packages are being shown. Jardine comes out first to that awesome bagpipe entrance music of his. He’s getting a nice pop from the fans, but expect Silva to get a rock star like reaction. Jardine is one of the more frightening looking dudes in MMA but is by all accounts a real sweetheart outside of the ring. Rogan thinks Jardine has the size and strength advantage. Lights dim and the crowd starts to cheer for Silva–he’s a legit legend so why not? Silva comes out to the standard issue ungodly techno music that seemingly every Brazillian fighter uses. Fans slapping high fives with Wandy but the reaction is more like the fans are awestruck. Either that or they just can’t be heard over the techno music. Now it stops for a moment and we can now hear that Wandy is getting a real nice pop. Now he’s getting the superstar pop he deserves. Tale of the tape is shown and Jardine has 3″ height advantage and a 2″ reach advantage. He just looks like a bigger dude–Jardine came down from heavyweight to fight at 205, while Wandy walks around at 210 and is considering going to 185. Jardine gets a big reaction though a mixture of cheers and boos. Silva getting a big reaction with some fans waving Brazillian fans. Steve Mazzagatti is your ref and we’re set to go..
ROUND 1:
Serious staredown between two serious starers gets us started. Jardine’s unorthdox style could cause Wandy trouble. Wandy catches him with a HUGE counter righthand punch coming in and jumps on him like a pitbull on a porkchop and starts to lay the ground and pound on Jardine. Mazaggati watches for a minute, probably out of respect for Jardine’s skills before jumping in. Jardine is out COLD. He’s moving his hands now–so that’s a good sign. Wandy keeps trying to go over to check on Jardine, but the doctors are busy checking him out. For a guy called “The Ax Murderer” he’s really a class dude. Fans are stoked about an amazingly dominant victory at 36 seconds of the first round…
WANDERLEI SILVA WINS BY TKO
Silva gives a typically classy speech. Really one of the scariest looking dudes walking the face of the earth, but in actuality one of the generally most decent guys you’ll find in any sport. Jardine walking out under his own power so that’s a good sign. Showing another prelim taped fight..back when the live action continues…
