The Savage Science (hearts) ‘The Queen of Spades’
By Jim Murphy May 31st, 2008With the exception of Kimbo Slice, most of the media attention in advance of the EliteXC debut on CBS is going to Gina Carano. While the part time ‘American Gladiator’ deserves credit for helping put women’s MMA on the map, we want to give props to OUR favorite fighter. Shayna Baszler is trained by another one of our favorite fighters, Josh Barnett, and is a submission machine. If you want to see a perfect armbar submission check out Shayna’s victory over Jennifer Tate on an EliteXC card from October 2007. We’re hoping the talk of EliteXC creating a women’s title is true as we expect to see ‘The Queen of Spades’ wearing it sooner rather than later.
Not only is Shayna an excellent fighter, she’s incredibly cool. With all due respect to Gina Carano, she doesn’t have banners for the British metal band ‘Bolt Thrower’ and the Sioux Falls roller derby team on her MySpace profile like Shayna does. Anyway, check out her MySpace profile. If EliteXC doesn’t put *her* on CBS before long we might have to start a viewer campaign to get her the network TV exposure she deserves like ‘Star Trek’ fans did with NBC back in the day. We’ll definitely be rooting for Carano against Kaitlin Young as we’d like her to still be undefeated when Shayna beats her.

Here’s a picture of Shayna in a prefight faceoff with Jan Finney, who managed to make it through almost all of the first round before she succumbed to an armbar submission
