A guide to MMA for the mainstream media

By Jim Murphy June 2nd, 2008

Michael David Smith over at AOL Fanhouse, whom gets recommended so often here that he’s getting tired of it, has a particularly excellent and timely article up today. He offers a list of tips for the mainstream media on covering MMA and basically hits the nail on the head. Here’s an example:

Don’t call it “ultimate fighting.” The name of the sport is mixed martial arts, or MMA. The most popular organization within MMA is Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC. The phrase “ultimate fighting,” with those two words lower case, should never appear in your articles. Ultimate Fighting, a phrase that is a registered trademark of the UFC, can appear in your articles, but it should be followed by Championship — and in general, you can just say UFC.

MDS also gives props to our work here at The Savage Science, so we’re going to give him props right back. Not that we don’t do so just about every day–Smith is a daily ‘must read’ for the entire SavSci staff and does a great job blending the top MMA news of the day with his always insightful commentary. He can also be counted on for unique perspectives on stories that you just won’t get anywhere else. The fact that he does all of this excellent MMA work *and* covers a number of other sports equally as well is nothing short of amazing. Humility no doubt precluded him from mentioning himself on his list of ‘best MMA writers in the business’ but he definitely belongs there.
