BREAKING: Floyd Mayweather to sign with UFC?

By Jim Murphy June 7th, 2008

Just when you think the MMA world can’t get any stranger….

Wrestling-Edge.com is reporting that recently retired boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will sign with the UFC. According to their reports, that’s the big announcement that will rock the MMA world according to Dana White. Here’s what the website had to say:

However, the big announcement being rumored is that Floyd Mayweather will be signing or has signed with UFC. For those that did not read our last update, Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing. If this signing turns out to be the case this would be a huge coup for UFC as it would surely attract some of the boxing fans that have not given UFC a chance.

Mayweather recently was part of WrestleMania XXIV in Orlando where he participated in a match against Paul “Big Show” White. Mayweather was open to do a rematch but now with the UFC deal that looks to be off the books.

It could all be circumstantial, with Mayweather’s retirement and the Dana White announcement coming close together. Since Mayweather has already done pro wrestling, however, and has expressed interest in MMA before it could actually happen. Dana White isn’t doing anything to dismiss these rumors–in an interview with UK based Setanta Sports the UFC President said that his promotion was ‘due to have an all star caliber boxer make the jump to mma to help legitimize the sport’.

So in the past week we’ve had Kimbo on CBS, Donald Trump buying into Affliction and now possibly the best ‘pound for pound’ boxer in the world trying his hand at MMA. Look for the MMA world to get even more bizarre in the coming few weeks…
