DREAM.4 Katsuhiko Nagata vs. Shinya Aoki

By Jim Murphy June 15th, 2008

Nagata comes out first to some techno remix of ‘You’ve Blown It All Sky High’. No secret what Aoki’s entrance music will be…a bunch of smoke, ‘Baka Survivor’ plays and here comes the man himself: Shinya ‘Tobikan Judan’ Aoki. HDNet seems to be having some trouble with the satellite feed as it keeps freezing up and for once it doesn’t appear to be Comcast’s fault. Aoki saluting the fans on his way to the ring. Nagata looking on very amused at the Aoki entrance. Announcers correctly note that Aoki may be the ‘most emotional’ fighter in the tournament. He may be the most emotional fighter in the world.

ROUND ONE:

Ten minute first round, five minute second a la PRIDE. Aoki wearing his trademark longed pants in a multicolored print with every obnoxious neon color from the 80’s. Hot pink, turquoise, lime green, ruby red. Aoki with a takedown, the ref stands them up, and then another easy takedown. Now he’s moved from side control moving to a top mount. Aoki just mauling Nagata on the ground. Rutten questioning why he’s not doing the ground and pound, but it appears that he’s looking for the submission. Now Aoki starts with a few big punches but again looks to be tiring out his opponent. Someone needs to remind Rutten that Aoki isn’t Kimbo Slice–he’s not a particularly powerful puncher but among the best submission specialists in the sport. Aoki back to a ground and pound waiting apparently for Nagata to instinctively roll over to protect his face which will open up the potential for a choke. 5 minutes into the first round and its been an Aoki rout. Out of nowhere a gogoplata from the top mount forces Nagata to tap. Rutten comments that he’s never seen one done from the top mount in his carer and he’s seen it all.

SHINYA AOKI WINS BY TAPOUT (GOGOPLATA)

Aoki runs out into the crowd to hug someone–his father presumably–and respectfully thanks Nagata and his corner. Aoki now addressing the crowd in Japanese. He’s a -175 favorite to start crying at some point. Well look at that–he didn’t start crying–but he thanks the fans for coming out and says he’ll win the tournament.
