Strikeforce: Miesha Tate vs. Eleina Maxwell

By Jim Murphy June 27th, 2008

Miesha Tate’s got something of a hot Lita Ford rocker chick look going. She’s from Olympia, Washington–yet another MMA pro from the Pacific Northwest. She’s 1-1 in her pro career with the loss coming to tough Caitlin Young. Tate wrestled on the boys wrestling team in high school. Bas wonders if she also shared a locker room with the team. Somehow that’s doubtful. Maxwell grew up in Muscle Shoals, AL. She went the distance with Gina Carano in 2006 which is a pretty impressive accomplishment. Maxwell is 2-2 in her pro career. Her nickname is ‘Beef’, which she got in a former gig working at Outback Steakhouse. Her co-workers were impressed with her ability to put away steaks and gave her the moniker. Rice makes the somewhat profound observation that ‘Beef’ is a better nickname than ‘Bloomin’ Onion’. Maxwell is a San Jose local so she gets the better reaction from the crowd…

ROUND ONE:

Tate opens the match with a kick and quickly gets the takedown. On paper Maxwell has the superior technical background but Tate looks to be significantly more powerful. She’s in Maxwell’s guard trying to pass but is unable to do so. Maxwell defending nicely from the bottom for a while but Tate finally passes guard and gets full mount. She lands a few punches but Maxwell is defending well, blocking punches with her arms and using her legs against the cage to try and extricate herself. Out of nowhere Tate cinches in the arm bar a la our favorite female fighter Shayna Baszler. Maxwell tries to roll out to relieve the pressure as the round draws to a close. Just an impressive display of guts as she essentially toughs out a fully extended armbar for over :30. Rutten notes that ‘its only pain, there’s no permanent damage’ which is today’s evidence that fighters are just wired differently. Tate gets the round 10-9.

ROUND TWO:

Tate gets the takedown again. She looks so much more powerful than her opponent and took her down with ease. Picture freezes up now for a moment and quickly return–it was HDNet’s fault here for once and not Comcast. As we return Tate is back in full mount, she gets in a full punches but Maxwell blocking well for now. She’s landing punches with more effectiveness now and out of nowhere Maxwell uses her leg strength to extricate herself with head scissors. Tate spins out and is trying for a kimura or an armbar as the round ends. Another round for Tate, but kudos to Maxwell for her unique leg scissor escape/choke. 10-9 Tate, 20-18 she leads. Showing the replay of the head scissors now and that would have been a cool submission–are you watching Shinya Aoki?

ROUND THREE:

Strikeforce is using CompuStrike stats for this fight and they’re showing a clearly dominant bout for Tate. Tate starts the third just bulling Maxwell against the fence. Looks like Tate is thinking that she’s got the decision in the bag and is going to coast the rest of the way. The ref is going to move them away from the cage and Tate tries for a singleleg. She doesn’t get the takedown and Maxwell gets Tate’s back in her first significant offensive move of the night. Tate defending nicely, but she spins out of the choke position into an armbar attempt. Round ends with Tate covering up. Hard to see anything other than a Tate victory, but Maxwell gets round 3. We’ll call it 10-9 Maxwell for round three, but Tate gets the victory on our card 29-28.

MIESHA TATE WINS BY UNANIMOUS DECISION

Tate looked really good–very powerful and good wrestling skills. Expect to see more of her in the future.

Tate was the one who “wrestled on the ALL BOYS team” in high school. Tate trains in Olympia Wa and also Yakima WA but was born and raised in Tacoma WA.
She was nick named “Take Down Tate” in High school.

  2. cindi Says:

Yeah, I heard Tate was called “take down” in High school. Cool nikname 4 a girl.
hey, did anyone besides me think that Maxwell tapped out during the arm bar in first round? I thought I saw her tapping on Tates leg.
    Bad reffing?

I’ll have to review the tape but if I remember correctly Maxwell jumps up at the horn and emphatically informs the ref that she didn’t tap. I don’t *remember* seeing a tap but as I’m watching and writing at the same time I may have missed it. In any case, I don’t think this is an instance of bad officiating–on balance, I’m of the opinion that most MMA and boxing refs do a good job. At the same time, they’re only human and they’ll miss calls from time to time. As Bas Rutten said at the time the particular arm bar wasn’t one that would cause damage so it was just a matter of dealing with the pain–easier said than done, of course.

In any case, I’ll track down the footage and see what I can see…

    Awsom, Thanx.
I am just beginning to watch MMA and wasn’t sure what I saw.
    :o)

OK, I’ve got the video of the fight running even as we speak. First of all, referee Marcos Rosales is a respected and experienced official who’s worked in boxing, kickboxing and MMA. I remember seeing him doing fights in Nevada in 2000 so he’s at least been in the game for 8 years and most likely longer. In other words, not a guy who’d be missing something due to inexperience.

Actually, you may be right–with just a couple of seconds left in the round it appears that Maxwell taps her knee twice. The ref could have missed it or it could have been a judgment call–maybe he thought it was more of a ‘the rounds over, let go of me’ type tap or just decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he thought that since she’d toughed it out for the better part of a minute he’d cut her some slack. Rosales was looking down at the other side of the knee and maybe his view was obscured or he was already preparing to separate the two fighters at the horn.

But regardless of what Morales saw or why he didn’t stop the fight it looks like Maxwell caught a break there. If Tate had ended up losing the fight it might have been an issue but everything worked out.

And if you’re just starting to watch MMA that’s even more impressive–you have very good eyes! You caught something that both announcers, an experienced ref and yours truly missed. Well done–maybe you should become a ref :-)

Just watched the fight again. Yeah, looked like a tap but I agree the fight still ended well and refs are only human.
Good fight, my first time watching Tate. She’s got my attention and I look forward to seeing more of her fights. Thanks Murphy for postings of the 3 rounds. Please keep the info up to date on Tate and all the female MMAs. I know they have worked hard to get where they are and sites like yours help them a lot.
I’ll be back, definately got a fan here
