EliteXC: Shayna Baszler vs. Christiane Cyborg

By Jim Murphy July 26th, 2008

Coverage switches over to CBS now, and the women’s matchup will open the event. We’re still in opening chatter mode with Ranallo, Shamrock and Gus Johnson. They’re now showing the obligatory video of the main event fighters–Scott Smith and Robbie Lawler– entering the arena. From the angle they’re shooting the exterior of the arena from it looks pretty nice…

Gina Carano shown, crowd gives a nice round of applause. Cyborg is a big powerful looking broad. Still not convinced that “she’s” really not Nate Diaz in a wig…

“Anybody that’s an old school metal fan knows that the guitar is a battle ax”
–Shayna Baszler

“I can pull a submission out of my butt”
–Shayna Baszler

Tale of the tape indicates that its a pretty even physical matchup, but Cyborg sure looks bigger. Fans cheer enthusiastically, probably the first time the Stockton-ites have seen a fight with women not involving mud, chocolate or whipping cream. Cyborg introduced first, gets a polite round of applause. Shayna introduced next with Josh Barnett hanging on the cage behind her. Steve Mazagatti is your ref…

ROUND ONE:

Shayna trades punches for a moment, fight goes to the ground with Shayna working a kneebar and then a toe hold. Cyborg gets top position and tries to work the ground and pound. Shayna with another takedown and then working another leghold. Ranallo says that women should fight 3 5 minute rounds and Shamrock agrees. Cyborg gets a warning for hitting the back of the head. Shanya’s round, as she avoided Cyborg’s power shot and got off a few nice submission attempts. 10-9 Baszler

ROUND TWO:

Shayna leads with a big body kick and then a leg kick. Cyborg gets some nice hits from the clinch. Cyborg with a big punch, Shayna with a leg kick. Knee to the face by Cyborg. Leg kick by Shayna. Shayna looks tired and now taking a beating from Cyborg. Cyborg thinks she’s won but the fight isn’t over. Shayna taking punches in bunches but Shayna pulls guard. Cyborg stands up, wanting nothing to do with Baszler on the ground. Shayna taking a lot of punches and a big right hand puts her down for the count. Shayna made the mistake of trading strikes with a monster like Cyborg and paid for it.

CHRIS CYBORG WINS BY TKO

Shayna has a nasty cut on her head–sorry to see her lose but she’s tough as hell and showed a ton of guts in the loss. Gina Carano interviewed, and EliteXC has a great “heel” to match up against postergirl Carano.
