Affliction 2: Lindland vs. Belfort

By Jim Murphy August 1st, 2008

Add another match to the tentative card for Affliction 2, which is supposed to be taking place on 10/11/08 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas and its a good one–SAVSCI Oregon homeboy Matt “The Law” Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort:

Olympic Silver Medalist Matt Lindland will take on former UFC light-heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort for a title in Las Vegas at the second Affliction event on Oct. 11.

Belfort revealed the fight to Tatame magazine, saying that a broken hand suffered in his July 19 knockout win against Terry Martin at the first Affliction event will not be an issue.

“The doctor will analyze it, but I may stay four weeks out,” Belfort said. “I’ll come back in October 11 to fight Matt Lindland for the belt.”

Belfort didn’t specify whether it will be an Affliction title or a WAMMA title.

The Affliction event, which takes place at the Thomas & Mack Center, is expected to feature Fedor Emelianenko defending his WAMMA belt against Andrei Arlovski. Tim Sylvia and Pedro Rizzo will also return.

no way should lindland belfort winner get the wamma title if thats suppose to go to the best fighter in the division then until someone beats anderson silva at 185 should anyone get that belt

As soon as the UFC realizes that there’s an entire world of MMA out there and agrees to recognize the WAMMA belt you’d have a good point. For now, I’m pretty happy with the Lindland/Belfort winner being WAMMA champ. Lindland is right up there with Silva as the best middleweight in the world, and nothing would make me (and most likely Lindland and Silva) happier than for the two to meet to determine an actual champ.

For some reason I haven’t heard a lot of people complaining about the WAMMA heavyweight champ……
