Great Moments in Olympic History: 2004 Women’s Beach Volleyball

By Jim Murphy August 8th, 2008

Here at THE SAVAGE SCIENCE we’ve all caught a raging case of “Olympic fever”. Either that, or we ate some bad clams–we’re not 100% sure. In any case, we’re going to celebrate the games with a series we’re calling “Great Moments in Olympic History”.

Face it, there are plenty of lame events that pass for “sports” in the Olympics. Olympic organizers favor sports that their Euro cronies can dominate, which is why baseball is no longer an Olympic sport and Trampoline is. But, as the old saying goes, even a blind squirrel occasionally stumbles over an acorn and Olympic organizers got it right for once with the addition of Beach Volleyball. Now, beach volleyball isn’t any more of a” real sport” than throwing a Frisbee to your dog in the surf while holding a beer but they have found what us hi-tech types refer to as a “killer app”–they make the gals who work the beach volleyball circuit play in insanely skimpy bikinis.

In fact, this is such simplistic brilliance that we’d like to see extended to a few more otherwise unwatchable sports–women’s soccer, for example.

So let’s relive the glory of the 2004 Olympics, shall we? The video quality is kinda sketchy, but we can still share in the excitement that we felt when one team of chicks in bikinis faced another team of chicks in bikinis. This would be a better video with some kick ass song like “Girls, Girls, Girls” by Motley Crue, but you get the idea…

NOTE: Thanks to “Mr. Know-It-All”…err…our friend and Eastern European fightsport authority Edo for pointing out the fact that this unforgettable “moment in time” occurred at the 2004 Olympics.
