UFC 87: Heath Herring vs. Brock Lesnar

By Jim Murphy August 9th, 2008

Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring up next, which should be short and explosive. Herring suggesting he’s fought “bigger, stronger and more accomplished wrestlers”. Apparently Herring has been fighting on another planet, since Lesnar may be the biggest strongest human being we’ve ever seen. Lesnar gets off a great quote: “I’ve got a head like a ball peen hammer” before he heads to the cage to his excellent choice of ring entrance music “Shout at the Devil” by the Crue. Motley Crue, incidentally, are playing here in Portland tonight meaning that several of us from Team Savage are having to miss the show in order to bring you people the live round by round. Hope you appreciate it ; )

Regardless of what happens with Lesnar’s MMA career he may be the most formidable athlete on the planet. He’s already got the most un-defensible takedowns in the sport. He could take down an elephant. Lesnar once ran a 4.75 40 yard dash–while he weighed 295 pounds. The guy is just a freaky athlete. Herring enters the ring looking like either Dutch Mantell, early Terry Funk, or “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Jr.–when he was wreaking havoc with Dick Slater and before he became Roddy Piper’s court jester in the WWE. Herring, of course, is just insanely experienced–with over 40 MMA fights. He’s supposedly got a weakness defending takedowns, which isn’t going to work well against Lesnar. Mike Goldberg points out that Lesnar has fought three times in MMA, while Herring has fought current UFC champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira three times…

Crowd pumped up as Bruce Buffer gets set to introduce the match. Lesnar will get a nice response–he’s a Minnesota local and wrestled at the University of Minnesota. Buffer doesn’t introduce him as a former WWE champ this time. Herring hearing the boos, which he seems to enjoy.

ROUND ONE:

Herring doesn’t want to stare down with Lesnar. Herring looks like he’s been training–he’s displayed some chub at various points in his career but looks lean and mena tonight. Lesnar misses with a flying knee and catches Herring with a HUGE overhand right and sends his opponent to the canvas. Lesnar wraps up Herring with a guillotine attempt, or maybe he’s just trying to use his size, bulk and strength to wear down his opponent. Herring trying to throw punches to Lesnar’s midsection which is like punching a brick wall. Lesnar shoots for a takedown and–guess what–he gets it. Lesnar’s takedowns just can’t be defended. Herring a bloody mess from that nasty right hand. Lesnar fighting a smart fight, taking his time and using his insane size and strength to fatigue his opponent. Herring is a huge dude and he looks diminutive compared to Lesnar. Herring trying to roll over to his guard, but Lesnar is a tough guy to work on the mat with. Lesnar very patiently smothering his opponent and pounding him when he moves. Lesnar throwing big knees to the body. Lesnar moves to the other side of Herring’s back now and there’s really nothing that Herring can do about it. There’s just no way you can overpower Brock Lesnar on the mat. Rogan uses the great “can hams for fists” line again. Crowd booing for some reason now, odd since their guy is dominating and pounding his opponent. Lesnar lands a bunch of knees to the body as the rounds end. Just wall to wall domination by the former WWE champ–if there’s any round that ever deserved a 10-8 this is it. SAVSCI scores it 10-8 Brock Lesnar.

ROUND TWO:

Lesnar looks like he’s been out for a quick jog, Herring looks like he got hit by a truck. Round two begins on the feet and Lesnar still very patient. Leg kick by Lesnar. Lesnar doing a nice job keeping his hands up and chin down. Herring tries to clinch, but Lesnar takes down 6′4″ 250 lb. Herring with minimal effort. Side control by Lesnar. If Lesnar’s technique ever catches up to his conditioning, size and strength he’s going to be unstoppable. Lesnar repeating his round one strategy, controlling him on the ground and now looks to take Herring’s back. Herring trying to roll Lesnar in his guard, but as Rogan says “even that’s no picnic”. Lesnar throwing down wicked knees to the body, close up of Herring’s face and it looks like his right eye is nearly swollen shut. Herring as tough as they come but so far he hasn’t been able to do anything other than get beat on. Lesnar has side control. Herring gets back to his feet and the two men grapple near the cage. It appears that Brock is trying to save his energy for the third round, but in the clinch he nails Herring with a couple of knees that buckle his opponent up. Herring lands a couple of knees. Another takedown by Lesnar as the horn sounds. This could be another 10-8 round, but we’ll be charitable and call it a 10-9 Lesnar. That makes it 20-17 Lesnar. Man, they’re showing Lesnar in his corner and he’s a giant compared to the professional fighters he trains with.

ROUND THREE:

Big kick by Lesnar starts the action. Straight right by Lesnar. Herring’s going to bring the fight to Lesnar no matter how hurt he is–he’s one of the genuinely toughest SOB’s in the sport. Lesnar now has Herring against the cage and the two fighters are exchanging knees. Lesnar gets Herring to the ground almost effortlessly–the thought of him just effortlessly taking down a 6′4″ 250 lb. guy is insane. Lesnar content with a ground and pound show. Herring trying to work a kimura but Lesnar has it wired and gets in a full mount. Herring doing as good a job as can be expected defending the All American amateur wrestling legend. You can say what you want about Lesnar’s WWE career, but you can’t dis a 106-5 record as a college wrestler. Herring gets up to his feet and throws some punches–the guy has insane heart–but he rushes right into a takedown which you can’t defend in the best of circumstances. 1:18 left now and Lesnar just ground and pounding the bejeezus out of Herring. Herring trying to get Lesnar off of him but no luck. Again, Herring is 6′4″ 250 lbs. and its like he’s a 10 year old to Lesnar. The round ends and this is going to be a unanimous decision for Lesnar–it could be three 10-8 rounds as it was wall to wall dominance and Herring may not have landed more than two or three significant blows the whole fight. Herring was mauled, and keep in mind that he’s a big dude with an amazing level of experience against the best in the world. 10-9 Lesnar on the SAVSCI card, again could have been 10-8

BROCK LESNAR WINS BY UNANIMOUS DECISION

Shot in the arm for the weak UFC heavyweight division, as Lesnar seems to have found a technique that works for him–a brutal, ground and pound wrestling based technique. Think Josh Barnett with better takedowns and fewer submissions. Here’s the judges scores: 30-26 all the way around….Rogan in the cage with Brock Lesnar, Lesnar reviews his fight and is clearly pleased with his dominant performance. He should be as he fought a near flawless fight against a tough opponent with a world of experience.

Loved Herring’s will!! Lesnar is bringing WWE trash into the UFC..we don’t want to see that…btw, never heard herring songs before but it was kick ass..anyone know the band and song?

You can say what you want about Lesnar’s previous career in the WWE, but there was nothing “fake” or illegitimate about his win over Herring. Herring is a tough dude–and a 6′4″ 250 lb. tough dude at that–and Lesnar brutalized him. This was the worst beatdown of Herring’s career and considering his experience and level of competition (Fedor, Vitor Belfort, Cro Cop, Big Nog) that’s saying something…

Lesnar’s entrance music was, of course, Motley Crue’s “Shout at the Devil”. I think Herring’s may have been two songs–the opening part was from Enrico Morricone’s incredible score for “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. Not sure about the second part–I’ll see if I can track it down and post it here on the blog..

In any case, thanks for your comment!

If you consider Brock hitting Heath a couple of times…which they were VERY good punches…but his ground game was not that great…i mean come on he laid on top of heath most the time…any other fighter with skill in the UFC that had someones back that many times would have submitted his oppenent…i was not impressed by Brock…but i was immpressed by the greatest pund for pounf fighter on the planet GSP…but also i have to say that Jon Fitch put up a good fight against the BEST

Did you see Herring’s face? It look like a truck had hit him.

If you’ll recall Lesnar’s first UFC fight against Frank Mir, you’ll remember that he got overly aggressive and it cost him. Tonight, he fought at a very measured pace using a deliberate style to leverage his ungodly size and strength.

You’re correct that many fighters would have been able to choke out Herring in the positions that Lesnar had him in but, again, he was sticking to his fight plan. His strength is…er….his strength, along with his size and his legit amateur wrestling skills. And what looked like “laying on top of a guy” isn’t that easy when the guy in question is a 6′4″ 250 professional fighter. There’s also a tactical reason for this–by “laying on top” of Herring, Lesnar was causing his opponent to expend a lot of energy without exerting much of his own.

Ultimately, it seemed to me that Lesnar has learned to “fight within himself” and has adapted a style that leverages his many positive attributes as a fighter while minimizing his weaknesses. He’s still got a ways to go before he’ll be considered a top 10 heavyweight (since Affliction has most of them under contract!) but at a young 30 and with the development as a fighter he’s shown in such a short time the sky is the limit for him.

  5. Joe Burnes Says:

Any luck on finding Herring’s second entrance song?

Not as of yet…I’ll post here as soon as I do. If you’d like drop us an email at savagescience@gmail.com and I’ll notify you personally as soon as I come up with something :-)

BTW, forgot to comment on the last part of Mike D’s post–you’re absolutely right that Fitch is all man and a bad dude. Most fighters wouldn’t have made it out of the first round and he gutted his way through five. And for what its worth, we’re in the process of compiling our inaugural SavSci PFP ratings and at the moment GSP is neck and neck with a certain Russian heavyweight. Based on his sheer domination starting with his Koscheck fight, and the quality of opposition he’s dominated GSP has my vote for best “pound for pound” in the world…though that Fedor guy *is* pretty good ;-)

Hey guys. That song is by a local Canadian band and great fiends of mine. The tune is called “Waitin On Hank” and the band is Dry County. They are based out of Brantford Ontario. They are on Myspace and Facebook if you are at all interested. That was a small sample of what they are all about…. kick ass to the max!! Was a total blast to hear them…
