ShoXC: Keith Berry vs. Ray Lizama
By Jim Murphy August 15th, 2008ROUND ONE:
We’ll pick up the action midway through the first round. Pretty evenly matched contest so far, mostly standup with each fighter getting off a couple of good flurries. Out of nowhere Berry nails Lizama coming in and floors his opponent. Berry jumps on his back and tries to cinch in the rear naked choke but can’t get the hooks in. Lizama ducks under a big punch and now starts a flurry of his own. Lizama looks to be fully recovered despite a bloody nose. Excellent first round, have to give the round to Berry–we’ll call it 10-9, judges may think otherwise due to the knockdown in what until that point was a fairly evenly contested fight.
ROUND TWO:
Berry lets his hands go to start the 2nd and appears to buckle Lizama momentarily. Berry is no joke–he’s the KOTC Middleweight champion and a very aggressive puncher. He gets off a flurry but stumbles into the cage. Lizama responds with a big barrange and he’s a bloody mess but is now fighting back. Great fight so far with both men near defeat at various points. Barry getting pummeled now and he collapses to the canvas due to a massive body shot. Berry looks like someone hit him in the face with a frying pan full of thumbtacks, ref Jason Herzog jumps in and stop it giving Lizama a big upset victory. His stock just shot up precipitously with a solid performance showing he could take a beating and fight back for a victory. Very entertaining fight–more Gatti/Ward than MMA, but wall to wall standup action.
