Minowa submits “The Predator”

By Lyman Hoyt August 17th, 2008

Ikuhisa Minowa, formerly known as “Punk” Minowa and now known as ‘Minowa-man’ defeated legitimate legend Don “The Predator” Frye in the main event of an DEEP promoted MMA show called “Gladiator” at the Momotaro Arena in Yokohama yesterday. Frye succumbed to a kneebar at 3:56 of the opening round. The only major names on the undercard were Gary Goodridge, who lost a lopsided decision to Hiromi Aamda and Jan Nortje, who beat Tom Erikson by 1st round KO.

While mixtures of fight styles within a single card aren’t that uncommon in Japan, this was a particularly bizarre amalgam of fights contested under MMA, K-1 and full contact karate rules. The Frye bout was MMA rules, with the Goodridge and Nortje bouts contested under K-1 rules.

Yeah, me too…though Don Frye is on a short list of my favorite fighters ever. He’s well past his prime so I’m glad to see Minowa get the victory. I’ll always owe him a debt of gratitude for tapping out Butterbean on a PRIDE show a few years back…
