Couture UFC return rumors
By Jim Murphy August 30th, 2008Fight Ticker has a good synopsis of the latest “Randy Couture working out a deal to return to the UFC” rumor:
This will be a new contract, not a return to the old one. It will likely pay him more and give him more benefits, but it will lock him into the UFC for the long term. In exchange for signing it Zuffa would drop all breach of contract charges.
The first fight would be at UFC 91 against Brock Lesnar, while I am all for Randy returning to the octagon I don’t agree with this fight as his first one back. I feel that this basically amounts to a title shot for Lesnar and considering that this would be his 3rd UFC fight and 4th MMA fight overall I think that is way too much too fast for Lesnar.
Believe it or not, the UFC is also considering a proposal from M-1 Global to co-promote a Randy Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko bout following the Lesnar fight in November
What has suddenly changed that The UFC is willing to co-promote with M-1? Don’t get me wrong I think that if this goes down it will set a precedent that could forever change the landscape of MMA. I am just curious as to what has Dana White and The UFC doing a complete 180.
The third proposed fight would be a bout against either current interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira or Chuck Liddell.
