Aptly named Warren Dick disses Patrick Roy

By Jim Murphy September 19th, 2008

Earlier this week we wrote about the legendary Canadians goalie Patrick Roy, who’ll rightfully be honored with the retirement of his number later this fall in Montreal. He’s already had his number retired by the Colorado Avalanche, and now his number #33 will take place among what is essentially a wing of the Hockey Hall of Fame hanging in the Bell Centre–”Rocket” Richard, “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, etc.

Anyway, in a review of today’s media the SAVSCI staff nearly spit our Cheerios at our collective computer monitors when we read a letter calling the great goalie “overrated”. Here’s the poorly written missive by the aptly named Warren Dick in the Montreal Gazette:

Re: “Fair play for Roy” (Letters, Sept. 16).

As a former goaltender, I must say that all the fuss over this overrated goalie is making my stomach turn.

I have seen great goaltenders over the years, and Patrick Roy is and always was overrated, especially by the press in Montreal. So if Tom Chiappi cannot obtain tickets to the Nov. 22 ceremony, mine are going up for sale.

Warren Dick
Mount Royal

Dick’s a former goaltender so he must know. One wonders where he won his 4 Stanley Cup championships like Roy did. We were going to mention Roy’s career 2.54 goals against average in over 1000 NHL regular season games, or his 2.30 goals against average in 247 career NHL playoff games, or his 3 Conn Smythe trophies for playoff MVP–the most in league history–or the aforementioned Stanley Cups. But really the best retort is one that Roy himself used on Jeremy Roenick at one point during his career:

“I can’t really hear what Jeremy says, because I’ve got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ear.”

So no doubt he can’t hear what Warren says either because now he’s got 4 of them plugging up his ear…

  1. Grady Roy Says:

You know where I stand on this matter, but since this is a family-friendly website, I cant go any further. Cause my choice of rhetoric isn’t allowed here. :o)

And I’d be in complete agreement…I was talking to someone earlier today about this and gave the analogy that its like some guy who played shooting guard in high school claiming that Michael Jordan was “overrated”…
