EliteXC: Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley

By Jim Murphy October 4th, 2008

Sheilds vs. Daley fight for the EliteXC welterweight title next…

ROUND ONE:

Shields starts with a inside leg kick and a couple of nice karate kicks. Shields shoots for the single leg and Daley sprawls away nicely. Wicked leg kick by Daley–he’s reaching with his jab but its been effective so far. Daley was dissing Shields’ standup but he looks to be the crisper of the two. Shields gets the fight to the ground and easily passes guard–he recently got his BJJ black belt and this is the last place you want to be against a BJJ black belt. Shields busy with strikes–not really heavy ones but they’re opening Daley up for a possible submission. Now Shields with the ground and pound, Daley tries to power out but so far nothing doing. Daley looks like he’s never seen a BJJ fighter before–now Shields laying in the ground and pound and Daley not defending. He’s not really hurt but he’s not defending and it could bring about a stoppage if he doesn’t watch it. Shields opening a can of whoop ass–he goes for the arm bar but the cage is in the way. He tries again but Daley defends nicely and now has top position throwing down some elbows and punches with 10 seconds left. Looks like Shields may have been cut with an elbow as the round ends….10-9 Shields…

ROUND TWO:

Daley with a head kick that just misses. Daley with a nice combination, and follows up with a knee. Shields tries to get it to the ground but Daley sprawls out. Left hook partially connects but Shields wants it to the ground anyway. Shields with a quick heel hook attempt but Daley gets away. Lead left hook by Daley connects, Shields shoots and misses for another takedown. Fighters struggle along the fence and Sheilds gets a takedown and ends up in top mount. He’s trying to set up an arm bar but he’s working the ground and pound for the time being. Daley smiles as Shields rains down elbows. Shields working for the arm bar but Daley’s such a powerful dude he’s having trouble. Side control by Shields–Frank Shamrock says that he may just be trying to tire Daley out on the ground. Shields gets the arm bar this time, Daley tries to power out but nothing doing. Daley is forced to tap to a textbook armbar…..

JAKE SHIELDS WINS BY TAPOUT (ARMBAR)

Nick Diaz vs. Eddie Alverez for the vacant light heavyweight title on 11/8. Could be a fight of the year….

I was AMAZED at the literal ease that Shields offered this evening, climbing over Daley like a damn jungle gym on the playground. Daley was amazingly outclassed on the ground and I’ve never seen anything like that outside of training sessions practicing defense for or trying to find “ins” for what are other fighters defenses.

Congrats to Shields, and another showcase of why having big-mouth syndrome offers to those that can’t staple lips.

What amazed me wasn’t his complete mastery on the ground but how Daley acted like he’d never *seen* Brazilian Jiu Jitsu before. Granted, you’re not going to learn a few tricks in a gym and outwit a BJJ black belt but you’ve got to do *something*–just laying there like he did is the worst thing you can do which is why the fight ended up the way it did.

Shields, even though he’s EXC welterweight champion, doesn’t get the props he deserves. 2 of his 4 losses came very early in his career and he’s got some impressive wins on his resume–not the least of which is current WEC champ Carlos Condit…
