Stockton Record on Jake Shields
By Jim Murphy October 4th, 2008The Stockton Record has a profile of EliteXC welterweight champ Jake Shields:
Jake Shields said there haven’t been many changes in his life since he won the Elite Xtreme Combat welterweight championship on national television. And it certainly hasn’t affected how he is preparing for his first title defense.
Shields, a Calaveras County product, will meet Paul Daley of Great Britain in Sunrise, Fla., in a scheduled five-round championship bout on today’s Elite XC card on CBS. Shields captured his belt on the same network when he stopped Nick Thompson in the first round on July 26 at Stockton Arena.
The main event is a heavyweight fight between Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock, a former Lathrop resident.
Shields, who grew up in Mountain Ranch and went to Calaveras High School, is one of the MMA’s hottest fighters. He’s won 10 consecutive bouts, the last five in the first round. He currently lives in San Francisco and trains at the Gracie Academy, and admits more people seem to recognize him these days.
“Other than that, everything is the same,” Shields said. “I live in the same place, I train with the same guys. Things are the same.”
