ShoXC: Mike Stumpf vs. Anthony Lapsley

By Jim Murphy October 10th, 2008

Stumpf comes highly touted, though Lapsley is no joke either. Robbie Lawler just interviewed–he’ll fight Joey Villasenor on the EliteXC card highlighted by Diaz/Alverez in November. All of the clueless mainstream sports media is tripping all over themselves saying that EliteXC “doesn’t care” about MMA in the aftermath of “Kimbo-gate” but that November card has a potential fight of the year on it in Diaz/Alverez and they just added another very compelling matchup with Lawler/Villasenor. Stumpf’s entrance music is some kind of up tempo polka music remix. Lapsley has a funny nickname “The Recipe”–hopefully Ranallo will give the backstory on that. He’s doing a Sakuraba meets gang banger look coming to the cage, wearing a black OJ Simpson style ski mask. Lapsley has a 3″ reach advantage, but the fighters are the same height…

ROUND ONE:

Stumpf came in a couple of pounds overweight, though Lapsley said they’d fight anyway. Lapsley comes out throwing a nice combination followed by a few hard knees from the side–Lapsley has *very* fast hands and has clearly done some boxing. Stumpf reverses the position and starts to maul his opponent with elbows and knees along the cage. Stumpf appears to be the better groundfighter though Lapsley doing a nice job scrambling out of everything. Lapsley is the reigning welterweight champ of the King of the Cage (KOTC) promotion. Lapsley lands some harsh punches from the top and now drops hammerfists on Stumpf–Stumpf triying to maintain a very close guard to try and recover. Lapsley has insanely long arms–it sure looks like he’s got a bigger reach advantage than 3″. Lapsley tries to dive back in dodging the upkicks–exciting and entertaining round controlled by Lapsley. “The Recipe” takes round one 10-9 on the SAVSCI scorecard…

ROUND TWO:

Fighters touch gloves to begin the round, and southpaw Lapsley lands a nice combination again. Stumpf supposedly a Golden Gloves runner up but he acts like he’s never seen a boxer before. Lapsley in side control now, tries to get full mount but no luck. Lapsley gets a single leg takedown and now works in Stumpf’s full guard landing a forearm–Stumpf trying to tie him up hoping it’ll get stood up but not sure he’s any better off standing against Lapsley whose shown some nice boxing skills. Ref stands ‘em up–Lampsley bulls Stumpf to the cage and we’re back on the ground. Stumpf tries a kimura but can’t make it work–he does get full mount with :30 left and hasn’t done anything with it yet. Round two ends, another one for Lapsley 10-9. He leads 20-18 on the SAVSCI scorecard…..

ROUND THREE:

Nice punch kick combo by Lapsley, but as his corner said between rounds he closes the distance too quickly and doesn’t give himself the ability to leverage his slick striking skills. Fighters now struggle along the cage and Lapsley gets another takedown and works inside Stumpf’s guard. Ref telling them to work or he’ll stand them up–Stumpf tired and he’s just laying there. Stumpf briefly works for an armbar–ref briefly calls time for some reason and then immediately calls “time in”. Not sure what that was about. Halfway through the final round and if the fight continues at this pace it’ll be a unanimous decision win for Lapsley. Ref stands ‘em up and Lapsley takes the fight right back to the ground. Just over a minute left and Lapsley is content to control action on the ground. Bloodthirsty meth addicts in attendance at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN boo at the lack of action. Stumpf still hasn’t done anything–ref is going to stand them up with a few seconds left. Nothing doing and this fight is over. 10-9 Lapsley, he should win the unanimous decision. We’ve got him 30-27 on the SAVSCI scorecard…

One of the SAVSCI staff just sent a text message explaining that Stumpf’s mouthpiece fell out on the ground out of view of the camera which necessitated the time out midway through round two.

29-29 even (?)
30-27
30-27

ANTHONY “THE RECIPE” LAPSLEY WINS BY MAJORITY DECISION

Not sure what the judge that scored it even was watching….Lapsley shows class during his interview, immediately giving props to Stumpf for his toughness….Lapsley needs to show a little more patience with his standup–he has sick fast hands and good technique but he’s too quick to close the distance. He’ll land a nice combination and immediately rush in and tie his opponent up. It would be one thing if he were using the punches to set up a takedown, but he just closes the distance without any real benefit.

Just to point out to anyone who doesn’t know this kid…Mike Stumpf lost 37 pounds within two weeks for this fight. No one actually pointed out the facts. Stumpf is a kickass fighter. He took this fight on last minute, and even though he was sick from loosing so much weight, he was able to last through the entire fight.

Stumpf has extreme determination and strength. Watch his upcoming fights and you will see how good this kid is.

Also, for the record, it was Lapsley’s mouth piece that fell out.

And serious probs to Lapsley. Definite class and respect for him as well!
