Couture vs. Lidell: A Match for the Aged

By Jim Murphy November 29th, 2008

The Winnipeg Sun calls the rumored Lidell vs. Couture main event for UFC 95 in Germany “a match for the aged”. Look for some exclusive info on the Germans’ less than enthusiastic response to the prospect of having the UFC live in their country coming shortly…

SENIORS TOUR

Both fighters are coming off high-profile losses and both are in the sunset of their storied careers. The fight is the UFC’s equivalent of the seniors tour, but no doubt it would be a draw for fans.

Liddell, fresh from a KO loss at the fists of “Sugar” Rashad Evans, will be 40, while Couture, who lost his heavyweight title to Brock Lesnar earlier this month, will be days away from his 46th birthday when the two hit the cage.

Since UFC 57, which grossed $3.3 million at the gate and brought in more than 400,000 pay-per-view buys, the fight club has shattered that record many times. UFC 66 (Liddell vs. Ortiz II) earned $5.4 million at the gate, UFC 83 (St. Pierre vs. Serra II) earned $5.1 million and others eclipsed the old record.

Pay-per-view buys — a figure the UFC closely guards — have also been shattered, according to interviews with UFC president Dana White.

The fourth battle between the two legends will no doubt have huge interest, but with no belt on the line and the fact the fight is in Germany, it is unlikely to shatter any records.
