Jorge Masvidal signs with upstart Bellator Fighting Championships
By Jim Murphy November 30th, 2008Bellator Fighting Championships recently signed Eddie Alverez, and they’ve just added another excellent DREAM veteran with the signing of South Florida’s Jorge Masvidal:
The newly launched Bellator Fighting Championships has signed Jorge Masvidal of American Top Team Coconut Creek and Young Tigers Gym for its 2009 fight schedule.
The first-of-its-kind mixed martial arts organization, based in Los Angeles and Chicago, will run 12 consecutive Friday night events that air the following night on ESPN Deportes, ESPN’s Spanish-language station.
Eight-man tournaments will be held in four weight classes: featherweight (145 pounds), lightweight (155), welterweight (170) and middleweight (185). There will also be non-tournament bouts to fill out each fight card. The events will be held throughout the United States beginning in April.
Masvidal, 16-3 at 155 pounds, is the first South Florida fighter to sign with the new promotion, which shows promise, according to ATT General Manager Richie Guerriero.
“The concept is great, and it generates interest in the sport from week to week and is another outlet for fighters,” Guerriero said.
