Paul Heyman speaks to Bobby Lashley

By Jim Murphy December 29th, 2008

This is from early December, but worth taking a look at–its a conversation between longtime pro wrestling manager/promoter Paul Heyman and Bobby Lashley, dealing specifically with comparisons between Brock Lesnar and Lashley:

Bobby told me: “I can’t change the fact Brock started in WWE before me, or that he made the transition to MMA before me, either.

“All I can do is concentrate on what I’m doing. I wrestled for 18 years, I’m a student of the game right now, I’ve been grappling, diligently working with a boxing coach, learning jiu-jitsu, taking this 100 per cent seriously, and I’m amped for my fight.”

Training at American Top Team in Florida, Lashley will debut December 13 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.

He said: “I’m very happy to get the chance to prove myself as myself.

“I’m going in to win. I don’t have to play any character except just be myself.”

The jury is still out on Lashley’s MMA future–hard to prove much in destruction of an overmatched foe in under a minute–but physically he’s a beast. Obviously its hard to extrapolate too much from a “worked” environment like pro wrestling to MMA, but based on that mileu Lashley could very well have more speed and agility than Lesnar along with the size and strength. Additionally, he may be receiving superior training at this point in his career–Lesnar obviously is doing *something* right but as far as training environments its hard to beat American Top Team (ATT). He’s being dismissed by many (including Dana White) as a carbon copy of Lesnar but given the right opportunities he could prove to be a first rate MMA fighter.
