UFC 94 weigh in
By Jim Murphy January 30th, 2009All fighters make weight for UFC 94–all in all a fairly uneventful weigh in. Crowd reaction live was pretty evenly split between GSP and Penn, though my take is that was the crowd was being respectful to both fighters. Fans let Penn hear it every time his promo video was shown on the big screen so my guess is that BJ will be the decided “heel” for the actual fight. SAVSCI favorite Clay Guida got a nice reaction–hard to believe that this will be only his second appearance on a live PPV fight. Conversely, his opponent Nate Diaz got the biggest “heel” reaction of the night–partially because he’s fighting Guida, partially because he’s Nick Diaz’s brother. Just looking at them its hard to see how Nick will be able to match up with Guida’s power and conditioning. Diaz is significantly taller but looks kind of scrawny compared to Guida. He’s a hell of a fighter, of course, with good striking and excellent BJJ skills–plus like his older brother he’s got the same “you’ll have to kill me to beat me” chip on his shoulder. Could be the fight of the night….
Only other item of interest–Akihiro Gono wore his “DJ Gozma” wig to the weigh in. The UFC has sure missed the boat with Gono, who’s ring entrances in PRIDE were some of the best ever seen in the sport.
