South Carolina close to legal MMA

By Jim Murphy February 27th, 2009

Here’s some good news out of the Palmetto State–South Carolina is well on its way to regulating MMA:

South Carolina could be the latest state to change its stance on mixed martial arts after taking a significant step to lift the ban.

Earlier this month, the state’s House Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee passed a bill to eliminate the ban.

Then on Thursday, the bill was passed on the House floor with a unanimous 57-0 vote.

Providing the bill is passed by the Senate, the South Carolina State Athletic Commission will be able to begin regulating MMA events.

That is awesome news about the ban, it seems as though the state is starting to loosen us, i.e. alcohol sales on Sunday, this ban, etc.
But did they as a legislative body just decide to do this or is this something that has to be proposed by someone in community?

I’ll try to get some more background info on the origin of the push to legalize MMA. My understanding is that a legislator introduced it as a means of bringing more revenue into the state. Let me do a little research and I’ll post an update in the next few days…
