Silly Spammer–spam is silly
By Jim Murphy June 28th, 2009We’ve got a little side project that we’ve started to mess around with. It’s a website where we feature and then generally heckle all sorts of silly spam. Here’s the intro blurb from the site:
I’d like to formally welcome you to the Silly Spammer website. We owe the entire existence of this website to Google Mail’s excellence in filtering spam. After a year of using Gmail we began to miss spam–not all of it, of course, but the spam that used to make us laugh. Some of it is really funny–either due to bad translation, shoddy promotional logic or just because it markets a product of dubious interest in any rational human being. It’s the Jerry Springer show, or “Cops” of the Internet where those of us who more or less walk the straight and narrow on the ‘Information Superhighway’ can stop and gawk at how the lower echelons of cyber-society live.
It wasn’t long after Gmail essentially erradicated spam from our lives that we found ourselves scouring the ’spam’ folder for the best examples of the genre–and by ‘best examples’ we mean funniest, most easy to heckle examples. Like you’re supposed to do when you find anything funny on the Internet, we started forwarding it back and forth to our friends, family, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. Some were amused and started forwarding their ’silly spam’ in return. Finally, someone who was less amused by this said: “I don’t really see what’s funny but I bet there are plenty of people who would get a kick out of this. You should post these spam on the web where everyone who chooses to do so can gawk as well and bask in your wit.”
We thought at first that he might have just been making fun of us, but after awhile the idea really started to grow on us like a highly effective penis enlargement solution from a Canadian pharmacy. So this will be our repository of funny spam. We invite your comments and if you have any good spam of your own send it to us!
Obviously its nothing that’s intellectually taxing, but we’ve got a bunch of stuff we’ll be adding to it in the coming week and you may get a laugh out of it. We’re suckers for spam humor.
