Alistair Overeem nightclub brawl story
By Jim Murphy July 21st, 2009We reported earlier today that Alistair Overeem’s hand injury hasn’t healed enough to facilitate his 8/15 Strikeforce fight. Here’s the story of how that injury occurred:
In a recent blog posting, Boon told how Overeem (29-11-0-1) had suffered a hand infection following a nightclub brawl earlier this month. According to Boon, Alistair and his brother Valentine (26-22-0) - both heavyweights - had been involved in an altercation that left five security staff needing hospital treatment.
“Alistair attended some famous dance club with his brother Valentine. Went to the toilet and did not have coins to pay the toilet woman. Alistair told her he would pay a euro when he came back, because he did not have change. Then the security guard who was near by started to get involved,” he wrote.
“Brother Valentine saw the incident and also started asking what the problem was. They offered to pay, but by then 6 security guards came over surrounding them. The Overeem brothers were asked to leave, Alistair was already outside when he saw his brother Valentine fighting.
“Valentine still was discussing the situation on his way outside with one of the security guards hit Valentine in the face with a flash light. Three security guards dived onto Valentine and brother Alistair wanted to go back inside to help his brother. This resulted in five security guards in the hospital.”
Boon went on the reveal that one of the security guards involved in the incident was fired afterwards, while a second tried to lay the blame on the Overeem brothers.
In the meantime, Alistair Overeem was complaining of a painful cut on his hand and went to hospital at the urging of Golden Glory team mates.
“It was only because of the management pushing him to go to the hospital that he saved his hand. When he finally got his injury checked, he was advised to stay a few days in the hospital. They told him if he would have come any later he would have lost his hand,” said Boon.
Neither Strikeforce nor Golden Glory have said when Overeem can now be expected to defend his title and a match is unlikely to take place before the end of the summer.

When you’re partying in Holland, always keep an extra Euro in your shoe. You do not want to raise the ire of the Toilet Lady.

Not to paint an entire group of people with a broad brush, but a lot of bouncers think they’re tougher than they really are. Would love to have seen one of them scrap with Overeem one on one. Epic fail!

Jim, I used to be a bouncer, and you’re right.

Like I said, I hate to generalize. I’ve met a number of cool bouncers–the kind of guys that would much rather defuse a situation rather than prove how much of a hardass they are. Unfortuantely, there’s plenty of guys who think that they’re a lot tougher than they are. Starting a fight with two professional fighters isn’t a good idea…

Im a heavily trained martial artist, i have studdied boxing, taekwondo, wrestling and karate. I got into a brawl with 2 bouncers about 2 years ago, all 3 of us were taken to hospital i had 19 stitchs and they had 35 between them. Many broken bones and lots of money spent on pub repair for the tables and chairs that were broken. You know the one thing i learnt, even if i had of walked out un-injured i still would have lost…and so did the Overeem brothers, because they fought. Fighting isnt the answer either way. unless someone els is in danger, i would take a few hits before i lashed out and belted someone. the Overeem brothers could have walked away still even after the flashlight. the is no arguement or problem that u cant walk away from.

common waldo….. the guy got hit in the face with a heavy ass security flashlight, don’t be an idiot. Any man in his right mind would have fought back after being attacked like that.

I concur with Nick. My guess is that it was a MagLite or similar. If someone hits me in the face with one of those, I’m fighting back. A lot of bouncers think they’re cops, but they’re not. If I’m Alistair Overeem I’m *definitely* fighting my way out of there.
