Very good point about how Fedor is relatively unknown to non-diehard MMA fans. If a company tries to build their promotion around one guy, it’s aready bound to fail, but when that is the recipe behind it, it will only fail more quickly.
That is a very good point–it has been done to some degree of success in Japanese pro wrestling but outside of that I can’t think of an example of where a promotion built around one guy has succeeded in the longterm even on a small level. Even at the height of Hulk Hogan’s popularity the WWE didn’t put all of the eggs in that basket, which is no small reason they were able to succeed to the level they have.
Obviously it didn’t work for Elite XC with Kimbo Slice, and even though Fedor is at the other end of the spectrum in terms of talent from Kimbo it didn’t work for Affliction either.
And damn Rashad for turning me into less of a hater and more of a fan. That’s a personality that he doesn’t really show in the Octagon. Being at UFC 98, I couldn’t hope for him to get beaten anymore savagely than the way he did because of his seemingly cocky attitude in previous fights, but every guy has a different attitude inside and outside of the Octagon. Either way, I still hope Rampage beats him too, although should be an EPIC fight to cap off a thoroughly entertaining season of The Ultimate Fighter.
A lot of guys really ‘play up’ their personality to hype fights or whatever and are completely different outside of that arena. I thought Rashad came off really well on the show.
