ESPN finally reports on Lesnar/Carwin postponement

By Jim Murphy November 6th, 2009

The UFC and Shane Carwin confirmed that his UFC 108 bout against Brock Lesnar was off due to the heavyweight champ’s illness on Wednesday. ESPN finally got around to reporting it a couple of hours ago. Good reality check for everyone who thinks that MMA is already a ‘mainstream sport’. Had, say, Kobe Bryant come down with mono it would have been reported immediately as breaking news, been the top story of the day and I would have had an ‘urgent’ alert on my live lines feed. The biggest star in MMA’s top US promotion has to withdraw from a bout due to illness and it doesn’t get reported for over 48 hours.

Granted, there’s been a lot going on lately in sports with the World Series and whatnot but that just underscores where MMA falls on the priority continuum for ‘The World Wide Leader’.
