James Toney pwns Dana White

By Jim Murphy December 8th, 2009

James ‘Lights Out’ Toney rips The Dana a new one:

Tell Dana White he can suck my [expletive]. That’s why he calls out them bum ass fighters. He called out Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather, but they ain’t calling James Toney out because they don’t want to see me. They have the same excuse that I am old, fat and short. Well, come and see me then because it should be easy for them.

Everybody thinks that I couldn’t fight in a cage. I got one of the baddest [expletive] in the world in my corner, man. “Pops” is one of the original cage fighting masters when he was fighting over there in Indonesia and won. I know all of the [expletive] that they think I don’t know. Dana White is a frustrated fighter because he used to be a boxer back in Boston and was getting knocked out every week, so he had to quit.

I think James Toney is still very active and can compete in the highest level. As for Dana White being knocked out every week, no wonder he hate boxing so much.

Dana talks out of both sides of his mouth about boxing. He tries to suggest that the UFC does everything right while boxing does everything wrong. There are those who’d believe it if Dana said he could walk up walls and shoot webs out of his hands, but objectively there’s as much politics (ask Big John McCarthy about that), greed and general nonsense in MMA–including the UFC–as there is in boxing. I’d suggest at the end of the day, those are frequently surmounted in boxing while to date at least they’re not in MMA. Remember the Tyson/Lewis fight? That was put together after much negotiating and resulted in a HBO/Showtime co promotion, which isn’t much different in that industry than a Coke/Pepsi co-promotion. It resulted in a few downright bizarre touches–a mixed announce team made up of both network’s broadcasters and maybe the strangest thing both Jimmy Lennon, Jr. and Michael Buffer doing ring announcements. The bottom line is that the fight got done. To date–at least in the US–there hasn’t been a co-promotional effort to make a big fight (and I’m not counting Affliction and Strikeforce working with Fedor’s M-1 Global promoters).

Dana isn’t stupid, however, and after trying to compete against Mayweather/Marquez and Pacquiao/Cotto (at least in the US) and getting teabagged on both (Mayweather/Marquez did 1 million + PPV buys against 400k for UFC 103, after Dana ‘called his shot’ that the UFC would trounce the boxing) he’s changing his tune. A lot of fans of both sports (myself included) were insulted that he referred to a badass like Juan Manuel Marquez with a 50-3-1 record as ‘whatshisname’ and ‘a nobody’. Rather than look *insanely* foolish after whatever he put up against Mayweather/Pacquiao failed to make a dent in the megafight buyrates, he’s been claiming he’s ‘a fan of fighting’ and that he’s excited about the forthcoming matchup.

Who knows what he really thinks? On a strictly practical level with the demographics of MMA fans starting to skew older–and with the UFC’s well publicized effort to woo boxing crazy Latino fans–bashing ‘the sweet science’ was the proverbial shot in the foot from the start. Of course Bob Arum has been less than diplomatic about MMA, and that’s equally stupid. Once you get away from ‘TUF noobs’ into more hardcore fans of MMA there’s a lot of respect for boxing as there should be. It doesn’t take a Norman Einstein level genius to see that at least for the foreseeable future, peaceful co-existence if not more formal crosspromotion and co-operation would be a win/win for everyone concerned.

learn to speak James you sound like a real ass! it would be lights out for you in the mma game. once a fan of boxing myself until it became so corrupt! come on over to mma and put your money where your mouth is!

  4. Jim Murphy Says:

Fight sports have always had an element of corruption and if you think MMA–including the UFC–is any different you’re naive. As far as Toney’s ability to fight MMA, who knows? A lot would depend on the matchup but in a standup exchange you’re talking a dude with a granite chin and very heavy hands. It would be interesting to see a world class boxer transition to MMA seriously, as opposed to just trying to bring his boxing skills to bear in the sport. On balance, the boxing in MMA is below even a third rate club fighter level and Toney is one of the best in the business. Like fighters with a background in BJJ, wrestling or any other specialized discipline he’d definitely need to round out his game to seriously compete. Against the right opponent, a world class boxer can definitely hold his own (see Ray Mercer vs. Tim Sylvia, for example). There’s plenty of people just looking to get on the MMA bandwagon at this point, and it remains to be seen how serious they are but you just can’t dismiss the potential effectiveness of high level boxing skills in MMA.
